CAT to Hold Public Meetings on Bus Stop Inventory Project

Chatham Area Transit (CAT) is seeking public input on the condition of the system’s bus stops, to assist in the overall update of Chatham’s Transportation System. The Chatham Area Transit Bus Stop Inventory project, currently underway, investigates and documents the current location and conditions of more than 1,000 bus stops and compiles them in a geographic information system (GIS) database. In addition, CAT is going through the process of updating its amenities guidelines for the first time since 2011. 

Chatham Area Transit delivers public transportation services that connect people to the places they need and want to go reliably, safely, and sustainably. 

CAT will host public meetings at the Joe Murray Rivers Jr., Intermodal Transit Center, located at 610 W. Oglethorpe Ave., on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024, at 6 p.m. and Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at 6 p.m. There will be no formal presentation. These meetings will provide the public an opportunity to preview the inventory findings and provide input on recommended bus stop improvements. 

“We want to hear from every user of the bus system. Your feedback is critical to help us get projects programmed and to upgrade our facilities,” said Executive Director and CEO Faye DiMassimo. 

In addition to the in-person meetings, the public can provide input by completing the bus stop improvement survey at http://tinyurl.com/bdzkdu6f. Surveys will be accepted until March 31, 2024.

Combining your biking or walking trip with public transit can help make your trip more successful. Chatham Area Transit offers a lot of options to extend your trip and help you go the distance.

All of CAT’s fixed-route buses are equipped with bike racks so you can take your bike with you at no extra cost. No special passes or training are required, and each rack can hold up to two conventional bicycles so they are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Extend your route downtown — for free! Thanks to a partnership with the City of Savannah, CAT operates a free downtown transit system spanning land and water.

While biking downtown might be easy, it’s a little difficult to get across the Savannah River! The Savannah Belles Ferry system provides free passage across the River between the riverwalk and Hutchinson Island from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week, and bikes are allowed.

See you at the CAT System Redesign Launch & Open House Jan. 15

The Chatham Area Transit Authority announced its Let’s Go! Designing Better Transit Together initiative, which will result in a system-wide redesign of the community’s fixed-route bus network. Residents are invited to learn more and provide early feedback at the first community open house on January 15, 2019.

Let’s Go! Community Open House

Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019, 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

Coastal Georgia Center, Room 113, 305 Fahm St, Savannah, GA

(Drop-In Format – A brief presentation, with Q&A, will start at 5:30 p.m.)

The meeting will be an open house format and community members are welcome to stop by at their convenience. During the open house, residents can learn more about the initiative as well as provide input through interactive stations and discussions.

The Let’s Go! Designing Better Transit Together system redesign project will rely heavily on input from the community. The initiative will feature a dedicated webpage, three online surveys, and a series of community meetings.  The project schedule is anticipated to conclude at the end of 2019. Walk, ride your bike or take the bus to Parking Matters open house meetings on March 3 and 4

The Parking Matters Plan is a collaborative effort between the CORE MPO, through the Chatham County-Savannah Metropolitan Planning Commission and the City of Savannah. Public open house meetings will be held on Thursday, March 3, from 4-7 p.m. (Presentation at 6 p.m.) at the Holiday Inn Express, 199 Bay Street and on Friday, March 4, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. (Presentation at Noon) at the Metropolitan Planning Commission, 112 E. State St.

Improving bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure is a key part of the Parking Matters plan, so please make plans to attend one of the meetings to emphasize the critical need for investment in safe facilities for walking and bicycling. It’s critical for leaders to hear from citizens who travel by bike. More information is available on the Parking Matters website.

Savannah Bicycle Campaign will give free bike light sets to anyone who arrives by bike, Healthy Savannah will give free pedometers to people who walk to the meetings, and Chatham Area Transit will have bus passes on hand for people who take transit.

The plan is intended to:

Identify the existing conditions with regards to parking supply and demand in greater downtown

Incorporate feedback and suggestions for improving existing parking and transportation mobility options in Savannah from members of the community

Develop strategies for Downtown Savannah’s parking and transportation system that bolster economic development, provide mobility options, and enhance the overall quality for life for residents, employees, and visitors alike.
