Savannah will join cities all over the United States to celebrate National Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 17. Citizens can participate in a group commute from Habersham Village Shopping Center to Johnson Square, where bicycle commuters will enjoy coffee from The Coffee Fox and healthy snacks. The group commute will leave Habersham Village at 7:30 a.m. A press conference in Johnson Square will highlight some exciting developments impacting cycling in Savannah.
Since 2000, bicycle commuting has increased 47 percent in the U.S. and more than 400 percent in some communities. There is growing interest in bicycle commuting here in Savannah and we invite experienced and new commuters to join us on May 17.
According to the League of American Bicyclists, which sponsors Bike to Work Day and National Bike Month, more than half of the U.S. population lives within five miles of their workplaces, making bicycling a feasible and fun way to get to work. Many people in Savannah live a similar distance from their jobs and we hope they will enjoy this opportunity to take two wheels to work. This event is cosponsored by the City of Savannah.
