FAQs
How far is the ride? How fast does it go?
The ride is approximately 9 miles and goes between 6-8 m.p.h. This ride lasts for an hour, so please make sure you are able to ride actively for that long! If you are unsure that your child could go that far, we recommend riding with them on a tag-a-long or fixed seat (see more about registration requirement for children below).
When does the ride leave?
The ride will leave Mother Mathilda Beasley Park at 7 p.m.
Do I need a helmet and/or lights?
Yes, all riders need to wear a helmet and use lights for the ride – it’ll keep you safe and visible! If you don’t have a helmet or a set of lights, we will have limited supplies to sell at the Moonlight Garden Ride or you can check out one of our generous sponsors — Quality Bike, Savannah on Wheels, and Perry Rubber Bike Shop — to purchase your gear.
What happens if it rains?
We ride rain or (star)shine! If the forecast looks iffy, consider bringing a rain jacket. If the forecast calls for a full on hurricane, we’ll make a call about the ride and let everyone know via email, Facebook and Twitter.
What do the registration fees go to?
The Moonlight Garden Ride is a huge undertaking, requiring quite a bit of cash and thousands of hours of work from our volunteers to put on every year. Registration fees help us defray the costs of the venue, party, performers, and police escorts. Event proceeds benefit our year-round efforts to make Savannah safer and friendlier for people of all ages and abilities who bike, walk and roll.
Is registration required for children?
Registration is not required of children riding in trailers, tag-a-long bikes, child seats or other equipment specifically designed for them. Ride registration is required for all children who are pedalling independently.
If I’m volunteering do I get to ride for free?
Yes, as long as your volunteer shift does not conflict with the ride, you are welcome to ride along!
Do I need to be a member of Bike Walk Savannah?
No, you do not — but we’d certainly love if you chose to become one and support our mission to encourage safe, efficient transportation options in Savannah! You can join BWS at the same time you register and enjoy membership discount pricing.
Is there parking?
Yes! On-street parking is available on the streets surrounding Mother Mathilda Beasley Park. Secure bike parking will be available inside the stadium and is included in the registration fee.
What sort of music will be played during the ride?
Frolicking fools throughout the ride will play family-friendly and fun tunes, and participants can enjoy local musicians prior to the ride!
What sort of costumes are you looking for in the contest?
What sort of costumes do you have? The contest is all about creativity and fun – so whatever you want to dress up as, we will be thrilled to see. In the past we’ve had pun-based costumes, super heroes, cartoon characters and other people dressing up in outlandish getups. We won’t hedge you into anything in particular so you can let your imagination go crazy! Just make sure your costume is family-friendly — and that you can bike while wearing it!
What can/can’t I bring to the event?
Food and beverages will be available for purchase at Mother Mathilda Beasley Park. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted on the ride. Please bring what you can carry on your bike — we won’t be able to delay the ride if you need to drop things off back at your car!
Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
No
I have a question, but don’t see it listed here. Who do I contact to ask it?
