Bike Walk Savannah to Host 7th Annual Holiday Bike Drive

Many of us remember the feeling of fun and freedom that came with getting a bicycle of our very own. In an effort to spread some holiday cheer and ensure that children across our community can have that experience, volunteers from Bike Walk Savannah’s New Standard Cycles Program take in donated kids bikes, fix them up, and work with Blessings in a Book Bag to identify kids who would not otherwise receive a bike for the holidays.

Bike Walk Savannah has organized Bike Drop Off Days on Sundays to make spreading holiday cheer a little easier. New locations to be added.

Volunteers will be on hand to collect the bikes at the following locations:

Bike Walk Savannah HQ – 1301 A Lincoln St. Nov. 22, Dec. 6, Dec. 13 from 2-4 p.m.

Green Truck Pub – 2430 Habersham St. Nov. 22, Nov. 29, Dec. 6 from 12-4 p.m. (Drop off at Drive Thru on Maupas Ave. side)

Community members are encouraged to donate bikes for kids of all ages that have been outgrown or are no longer needed. Volunteers can work with a little dust (and change some tires, tubes or grips) but please — no rust.

If your organization would like to serve as a drop off point or collect bikes to deliver to Bike Walk Savannah, please email info@bikewalksavannah.org

Financial contributions can be made at bikewalksavannah.org/donate. These donations help sustain the important work done by Bike Walk Savannah to redefine our city as a place for people, no matter their mode of transportation.

COVID-19 and Bike Walk Savannah

Friends,

Things are hectic right now. The news (and response) is changing daily, and we’re all striving to do what we can to limit the spread of COVID-19.

As such, we have a few new rules and procedures that will be in place through April 30, 2020. At that time we will re-evaluate and extend the date if necessary.

  • The Bike Walk Savannah offices are closed to the public through April 30, 2020.
  • We will not be accepting donations of bikes, parts or accessories through April 30, 2020. If you find some items to donate while cleaning (I get it!) please hold onto them until that date, or email info@bikewalksavannah.org to figure out a solution. Please do not leave any bikes at our office.
  • We will be working behind the scenes to continue refurbishing bikes from our existing stock for clients. If you are a current New Standard Cycles volunteer, we will be in touch, or please email Henry at bikes@bikewalksavannah.org with any questions.
  • Fix Your Own Bike Night for March and April have been canceled.
  • We will not be completing any walk up services or assistance at this time. If you have an immediate need, please contact your case manager to schedule an appointment or contact Henry at bikes@bikewalksavannah.org.

A majority of our events on the calendar for the remainder of March and April have been canceled. Like many businesses and organizations in Savannah, this means we are going to take a hit this year. If you have the means to give, please help us out at bikewalksavannah.org/donate.

We are working on fun new virtual events and programming, so make sure to stay tuned! And we always recommend checking out bikewalksavannah.org/routes for a fun new bike ride. Have suggestions you’d like us to add? Send me an email at caila@bikewalksavannah.org.

And as our streets clear of moving vehicles, please remember that they are not clear of everything — people are biking, walking, and connecting in their neighborhoods as best they can. Please slow down and be aware of your surroundings. We do not want to be adding to the number of people who need assistance at our hospitals.

If you have any questions or need immediate assistance, please email me at caila@bikewalksavannah.org or give me a call at 912-228-3096. I’ll do my best to get back to you as soon as possible.

Thanks,
Caila Brown

Children’s bicycles needed for annual Holiday Bike Drive 2017

Our New Standard Cycles program is seeking donations of children’s bikes for our annual Holiday Bike Drive in conjunction with Blessings in a Book Bag. After volunteers recondition the bicycles, they will be given to deserving children selected by Blessings in a Bookbag on Dec. 16. Here’s coverage of last year’s event from Fox 28: Savannah Bicycle Campaign gives 53 children bikes this Christmas.

Bikes can be dropped off at 1301 Lincoln St on the following days and times:

  • Thursdays from 7:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
  • Sundays from 2:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
  • Other times by appointment.

Bikes can also be dropped off at the Wilmington Island Farmers Market on Dec. 2 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Please note that badly damaged or rusted bikes cannot be accepted.

For more information or to schedule a donation, email New Standard Cycles Program Manager Henry Rocha at bikes@bicyclecampaign.org. If you’d like to help refurbish the bikes, sign up here.

We are grateful to the Spiva Law Group for providing helmets to go along with the bike and to Junk Luggers of the Coastal Empire for donating and transporting bikes.

Help make the season brighter for deserving children by contributing to our Holiday Bike Drive!

Holiday Bike Drive

For the third year our New Standard Cycles volunteers are refurbishing donated bikes for our annual Holiday Bike Drive. Last year we were able to provide dozens of bikes to deserving kids, who would not have received bicycles otherwise, through our partner Blessings in a Bookbag. We also provide helmets to go along with the bikes.

If you are interested in donating a bike, volunteers will be at SBC HQ (1301 Lincoln St.) to accept donations on Thursdays from 7-9:30 p.m. and Sundays from 2-4:30 p.m. We will be able to accept donations through Sunday, Dec. 11. To schedule a drop-off at another time, please email info@bicyclecampaign.org. Please do not leave bikes unattended at our office.

If you’d like to help get the bikes ready (no previous mechanical experience necessary) sign up for a volunteer shift today!

Battle of the Bikes 2

We also hope you can join us at Southbound Brewery on Friday, Dec. 9 for Battle of the Bikes 2! See who will win the Bicycle Repair Relay Race! We’ll have teams of mechanics from local bike shops participate in a relay race, where each team has a given number of kids bikes to refurbish and see who can complete the repairs first.

This event will happen during the brewery’s public tour and tastings. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the race begins at 6 p.m.! Tickets are $20 per person – including beer and a souvenir pint glass! — with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Savannah Bicycle Campaign.

Bring your reusable bags to Lucky’s Market and help New Standard Cycles

lucky's marketLucky’s Market Savannah has chosen SBC as one of its Bags for Change program. When shoppers bring in reusable bags, they receive wooden dimes to give to the organization of their choice. Lucky’s doubles the amount that has been raised at the end of the quarter.

We will used funds raised to buy locks, lights and helmets for recipients of bikes reconditioned by our New Standard Cycles program. Our friends at Blessings in a Bookbag, with whom we partner for New Standard’s annual Holiday Kids Bikes Drive, is also a Bags of Change partner, so bring plenty of bags and support both!

State Department official nominates New Standard Cycles for White House award

bicyclingBarbara J. Day, a section chief with the State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, visited Savannah earlier this year and learned how our New Standard Cycles program is working with Lutheran Services of Georgia to provide safe, affordable transportation to refugees who have settled in Savannah.

nsc logoDay nominated the program for a White House Champions of Change Award. Competition for the award was significant and the program was not selected. Nonetheless we are grateful to have been nominated. Congratulations to New Standard Cycles program Manager Jen Colestock and her volunteers for achieving this honor, and thank you to the Metropolitan Savannah Rotary Club for its support during our first year of operations. We appreciate everyone who has donated bikes, parts and financial support to this effort.

If you’d like to volunteer with or donate to New Standard Cycles, email Jen.
