Second annual Cranksgiving food drive set for Nov. 22

946977_226079384238390_1336622136_nOur second annual Savannah Cranksgiving Ride is coming up on Saturday, Nov. 22. stating at 1 p.m.

What is Cranksgiving, you ask? Well, it’s partially a bike ride, partially a food drive and completely a good way to spend a Saturday afternoon!

Partnering with Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia, the Savannah Bicycle Campaign (and you!) will be helping feed hungry people this holiday season. Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia’s mission is to feed the hungry by distributing nutritious food to nonprofit agencies and at risk elderly and youth, to assist in disaster relief, and work towards long term solutions to hunger and poverty.

Now for the details of how you can help!

11216_226079344238394_686248306_nRegistration for the ride will began at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 23 in Baldwin Park (41st and Atlantic Ave.). At registration, participants can pick up suggested donation lists as well as get tips on fast routes to take around town. The challenge will begin at 2 p.m. when riders should visit any (or all) of the stores listed below to purchase food:

  • Brighter Day (1102 Bull St)
  • Kroger (311 E Gwinnett St)
  • Red & White (4607 Habersham St)
  • Save-a-Lot (2400 Bull St)
  • Whole Foods (1815 E Victory Dr)

Plan to be back at Baldwin Park at 4 p.m. to compare your haul with everyone else’s! After we tally up the collected food, we’ll head to New Standard Cycles, the Bicycle Campaign Headquarters (Lincoln St. and Henry St.), to drop off the donations and celebrate at the after party!

Please note, this is not a marshaled ride. Participants will be on their own traveling between the stores. But we encourage you to bring your friends along for the ride – not only will you have a great time, you’ll generate even more donations for a worthy cause!

Participants should pick up items from the shopping list without going over $15-20 price limit. This is a way to donate to a good cause and to explore Savannah, not a race! Awards will be given based on:

  • Most Items per Person
  • Most Locations (receipts needed from each store)
  • Best Budgeter

Prizes will be announced at the after party at Bicycle Campaign Headquarters!

What should you bring?

First of all, you’ll need your bike and $15-20. You’ll also want to bring lights for your bike, as it will probably get dark by the time the challenge ends! We also suggest a helmet, but that is not mandatory. If you’re planning on carrying groceries, you should bring a backpack or other cargo solution for your bike.

Have questions? Want to get involved? Email Maggie Kantor.

Bicycling + Food Day Festival = Delicious fun on Nov. 2

food_fest_2013_geoffs_0441

We are bringing the bicycling fun to the 2014 Savannah Food Day Festival on Sunday, Nov 2 in three big ways!

First, we are offering our free bicycle valet from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Ride your bike to the festival in Daffin Park and we’ll look after it while you enjoy the festival. If you park at our valet, you’ll also receive a free gift bag (while supplies last). Car parking will be limited at Daffin, but we’ll have plenty of room for your bike.

Second, you can ride with us from Savannah Bicycle Campaign Headquarters, at the corner of Lincoln and Henry streets, at 11 a.m. Please arrive a little early. Helmets are strongly recommended and will be available for sale at a low cost.

Third, we will offer children’s bicycle activities and skills challenges at the park. Please note that each child must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, must have his or her own bike, and must wear a helmet. Helmets will be available for sale at a low cost.

Interested in volunteering? Sign up here. All volunteers will receive an SBC t-shirt, a Food Day t-shirt, lunch and our gratitude!

If you liked our Tweed Ride, you’ll love our Seersucker ride on Sept. 27

Seersucker Ride

What’s not to love about a bike ride with style? While you may have heard of a Tweed Ride, you may not have heard of the warmer (and stripey) summer equivalent. Seersucker Rides are a great way to show off your southern, summer clothing on your bike.

Savannah will be hosting its very first Seersucker Ride on Sept. 27 at 2 p.m.  (check out the Facebook event here for more details)! We hosted the city’s first Tweed Ride last February and we can’t want to host another dandy, jaunty trip about town. If you enjoyed the last one, we hope you’ll join us for another leisurely trip around town with a catered picnic in Forsyth Park afterwards.

Don’t know what seersucker is? Well, here’s a quick rundown of the fabric: it’s a light cotton fabric that typically has white with blue, pink or yellow stripes. The cotton is great for the summer (or spring and fall in Savannah) because it’s so breathable and easy to wear. You may have seen a seersucker suit at a summer wedding or on a tour guide around town.

Don’t have any seersucker in your closet? Don’t worry! We love you in seersucker or not – try to dress for the theme with some dandy cycling attire, even if it isn’t in this particular textile. If you do want to wear it, we recommend scoping out the Goodwill and thrift stores around town. You might find a nice outfit!

June 17 Cycle Social will feature Bowerbags demo

This month’s ride will depart from the south end of Forsyth at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17 and wind through historic district neighborhoods, bound for Moon River Brewing Company. In addition to the usual fun, food and beverages, our June Cycle Social will feature a demonstration of a new modular bag system — designed for bicyclists who ride to work, for fun or for everyday errands — from Bowerbags, a Savannah-based company.

“Bowerbags™ is proud to announce the launch of our new modular travel system inspired by the needs of an active lifestyle. Bowerbags understands there are different bags for different occasions so we developed a versatile system that adapts to life’s carrying needs in real time.
