2012 Year-in-review:
• Price Street bike lane, a striped southbound bike lane connecting Bay Street to Victory Drive, finally became a reality, fulfilling a goal we set at our founding.
SBC hosted a traffic officer bicycle training course for SCMPD officers in concert with Georgia Bikes.
• Working with advocates from across the state and Georgia Bikes, we helped to achieve adoption of a Complete Streets policy for GDOT that will change the way GDOT builds roads and which will be a model for policies in the city and county.
• Bike education continued with offerings at SCAD, the city of Tybee Island, area schools and Safe Kids.
• Our bicycling champion Kristin Mulzer defended our Dump the Pump Challenge title, again winning the race with car and bus.
• We assisted the City of Savannah in their continued expansion of convenient bike parking throughout the city, and have provided bike valet for temporary bike parking at events including the Savannah Music Festival and Savannah Food Day.
• SBC held our 4th Annual Midnight Garden Ride and played host to 650+ participants on a casual nighttime cruise through Savannah. We also put on many other free community rides including our 5th Annual Earth Day Wheelie, the Tellu-Ride, National Bike to School Day to name a few.
2013 Goals:
Among the projects we will be working toward in 2013 are the following:
• Together with the City of Savannah and Healthy Savannah, we will host 4 Ciclovia-style Play Streets events as a result of a recently awarded grant from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation.
• We are still working toward our goal of an SBC Bike Restoration and Education Center, to serve as a center of cycling activities in Savannah-Chatham, to provide a physical presence for SBC and to allow for collection and rehabilitation of discarded bicycles to be put into safe operating condition and distributed to members of the community who have limited means for transportation and often resort to dangerously ill-fitted, poorly maintained bicycles.
• More east-west bike facilities; we will continue input toward development of a corridor that would provide an improved link from eastside Savannah to downtown and assist the city with plans for new bike facilities on Windsor Drive and Largo Drive;
• Directed advocacy for adoption of Complete Streets policies by Savannah, Chatham County and the incorporated municipalities within Chatham County;
• More educational outreach to area schools and universities; we invite any and all leads for critical pathways to get access to audiences in the education community;
• Continue working toward Bicycle Friendly Community Status for Savannah. SBC helped Tybee achieve its recent designation as a Bronze BFC; we can do it here in the Hostess City.
