New Standard Cycles

Bike Walk Savannah’s New Standard Cycles program serves people who need safe, affordable and reliable transportation to get to work, to school and to other important destinations. Through this program we accept donated bicycles (and parts) and recondition them.

New Standard Cycles is not a bike co-op or repair shop. We offer a limited number of walk-up services at our 1301 A Lincoln St. location the first Sunday of the month, weather and holidays permitting. We have used Bike Athens’ Bicycle Recycling Program as a model for New Standard Cycles.

We rely on partnerships with nonprofit, workforce development and other organizations to identify deserving individuals who should receive bikes, then configure the bicycles based on their needs. We do not give bikes directly to individuals. A numbered decal is affixed to each bike, so that bikes can be identified if recipients need repairs or adjustments. Each bicycle recipient also receives a light set, lock, helmet and safe cycling education.

We were able to launch this program thanks to generous contributions and support from the Metropolitan Savannah Rotary Club, the family of the late Bill Brown, and Bike Walk Savannah members. We also receive support from Quality Bike ShopPerry Rubber Bike Shop, Trek Bicycle Store, Trident Sustainability Group and Green Badger.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Bicycles, obviously. We also accept bike parts, lights, locks, accessories in good condition. We will accept helmets, but only if they are brand new or very slightly used. For a complete list of items we will and will not accept, please visit our donation information page.

Please note, we accept donations on Thursdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and Sundays from 2-4 p.m. at 1301 Lincoln St. Donations outside of these times must be scheduled in advance with the program manager. Unattended drop off of bicycles and parts can create significant problems for our program because it forces us to arrange for environmentally responsible disposal or recycling of items that we cannot use, which costs both time and money.

Definitely. We especially appreciate help from professional or experienced amateur mechanics. However, all levels of mechanical ability are welcome. We have a fully-outfitted shop and invite volunteers to learn by doing, under the guidance of experienced mechanics. Skills learned by volunteering at New Standard Cycles will be useful to people who would like to repair and maintain bicycles for themselves, friends and family.

New Standard Cycles volunteer sessions happen Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. and Sundays from 2-4 p.m. If you have a large group that would like to volunteer, arranging alternate dates and times is possible. To volunteer, email bikes@bikewalksavannah.org or visit our Volunteer Page.

Walk up services are provided the first Sunday of the month from 2-4 p.m., weather and holidays permitting.

The services we offer are:

Self-Serve Air – Free!

Tubes – $10

Tires – $20+

Brake/Shifter adjustments – $5

(Does not include new parts)

Pedals/Seats/Other Parts – As Available

+ Suggested $5 labor donation for all services

Know how to work on your bike and need to borrow some tools? Stop by at any session and borrow them for $15/hour.

Other services will be referred to a bike shop

We currently have over 20 partners, but we are eager to talk with other nonprofit organizations or government agencies to help make transportation more accessible to Savannahians. Contact our program manager for more information.

Our location at 1301 Lincoln St. was originally the site of a Standard Oil Gas station and later an auto repair shop. Through our programing, we hope to provide a new standard in dependable transportation to economically empower working people in Savannah. Owning and maintaining takes a major bite out of household budgets and especially from those that are struggling to make ends meet. We hope the bikes will serve as vehicles that help people achieve financial stability and independence, while increasing their mobility.

In addition to our main mission, we offer a number of other programs, events and services at New Standard Cycles, including:

Bike Sales

Sometimes we receive bikes that aren’t a good fit for our program, but would be great for a daily commuter or recreational bicyclist in Savannah! Email bikes@bikewalksavannah.org or visit our Bikes for Sale page for more information.

Fix Your Own Bike Night

Have the mechanical expertise, but don’t have the tools? Join us for Fix Your Own Bike Night, where our mechanics will be on hand to provide assistance if needed. Bring your own parts and bike, a limited number of parts may be available for sale. Check out our Event Calendar for upcoming dates.

Holiday Bike Drive

Do you have children’s bikes sitting around collecting dust? SBC can help them find a loving home.

Through our Holiday Bikes drive, we will refurbish children’s bikes and through our partner Blessings in a Bookbag, donate them to families that cannot afford bikes on their own. Help make someone’s holidays even happier! If you are interested donating a bike, please contact bikes@bikewalksavannah.org to schedule a drop-off.
