SUMMARY:Eighth Annual Matt's Moon River Cruise
DESCRIPTION:The Eighth Annual Matt’s Moon River Cruise\, presented by the Law Office of Joseph J. Steffen\, will be held virtually May 21-26 — from wherever you are. \nThe event is named in memory of Matt Kohler\, who was hit from behind by a driver on July 26\, 2012 while riding his bike on U.S. Highway 80 in Bloomingdale. \nOn Friday\, May 22\, we will post a variety of routes ranging from 4-25 miles for all to enjoy in Savannah. These rides do not need to be completed on Friday — rather\, they are a suggestion of routes to take at your leisure. Participants are encouraged to post photos on social media\, tagging @BikeWalkSav\, #MMRC8\, #BikeWalkSAV\, #BikesUnite. Want to share your route from outside Savannah? Email us at info@bikewalksavannah.org. \nThe goal for Matt’s Moon River Cruise is to educate the public on how to safely share the road with people who bike and promote efforts to make our streets safer for all road users. Donations are requested to support our education programs and efforts with New Standard Cycles\, providing bikes for people in need of transportation. \nHelmets are highly recommended for any rides.

Entertainment\, food and games available. \n4:30-6 p.m. Costume Contest Registration \n6:30 p.m. Costume Contest Judging \n7 p.m. Ride departs from Mother Mathilda Beasley Park \n8:00 p.m. Ride returns to Mother Mathilda Beasley Park \nFAQs \nHow far is the ride? How fast does it go? \nThe ride is approximately 9 miles and goes between 6-8 m.p.h. This ride lasts for an hour\, so please make sure you are able to ride actively for that long! If you are unsure that your child could go that far\, we recommend riding with them on a tag-a-long or fixed seat (see more about registration requirement for children below). \nWhen does the ride leave? \nThe ride will leave Mother Mathilda Beasley Park at 7 p.m. \nDo I need a helmet and/or lights? \nYes\, all riders need to wear a helmet and use lights for the ride – it’ll keep you safe and visible! If you don’t have a helmet or a set of lights\, we will have limited supplies to sell at the Moonlight Garden Ride or you can check out one of our generous sponsors — Quality Bike\, Savannah on Wheels\, and Perry Rubber Bike Shop — to purchase your gear. \nWhat happens if it rains? \nWe ride rain or (star)shine! If the forecast looks iffy\, consider bringing a rain jacket. If the forecast calls for a full on hurricane\, we’ll make a call about the ride and let everyone know via email\, Facebook and Twitter. \nWhat do the registration fees go to? \nThe Moonlight Garden Ride is a huge undertaking\, requiring quite a bit of cash and thousands of hours of work from our volunteers to put on every year. Registration fees help us defray the costs of the venue\, party\, performers\, and police escorts. Event proceeds benefit our year-round efforts to make Savannah safer and friendlier for people of all ages and abilities who bike\, walk and roll. \nIs registration required for children? \nRegistration is not required of children riding in trailers\, tag-a-long bikes\, child seats or other equipment specifically designed for them. Ride registration is required for all children who are pedalling independently. \nIf I’m volunteering do I get to ride for free? \nYes\, as long as your volunteer shift does not conflict with the ride\, you are welcome to ride along! \nDo I need to be a member of Bike Walk Savannah? \nNo\, you do not — but we’d certainly love if you chose to become one and support our mission to encourage safe\, efficient transportation options in Savannah! You can join BWS at the same time you register and enjoy membership discount pricing. \nIs there parking? \nYes! On-street parking is available on the streets surrounding Mother Mathilda Beasley Park. Secure bike parking will be available inside the stadium and is included in the registration fee. \nWhat sort of music will be played during the ride? \nFrolicking fools throughout the ride will play family-friendly and fun tunes\, and participants can enjoy local musicians prior to the ride! \nWhat sort of costumes are you looking for in the contest? \nWhat sort of costumes do you have? The contest is all about creativity and fun – so whatever you want to dress up as\, we will be thrilled to see. In the past we’ve had pun-based costumes\, super heroes\, cartoon characters and other people dressing up in outlandish getups. We won’t hedge you into anything in particular so you can let your imagination go crazy! Just make sure your costume is family-friendly — and that you can bike while wearing it! \nWhat can/can’t I bring to the event? \nFood and beverages will be available for purchase at Mother Mathilda Beasley Park. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted on the ride. Please bring what you can carry on your bike — we won’t be able to delay the ride if you need to drop things off back at your car! \nDo I have to bring my printed ticket to the event? \nNo \nI have a question\, but don’t see it listed here. Who do I contact to ask it? \nEmail your question to info@bikewalksavannah.org.
